CrossFit Games 2021: What can you expect?

CrossFit Games 2021 is nearing and many participants are excited. Along with the usual CrossFit Games competitions like those for men, there will also be events for women. We all know about the Reebok's equipment, Pegboard contest, cutting system, and women's event. However, we don't know much. Keep reading to find out! Competition for women

The 2021 Crossfit Games' women's competition started this morning with the swim race. Jonne Koski, Tia-Clair Toomey Orr, and TiaClair Toomey Orr were the winners in the first event. Koski was the overall winner after keeping her lead throughout the competition. Tall and Eramoo O'Connell came in second and third, respectively. It was the first Games women's event and the women hoped to complete it.

The field is full of top-level athletes in the women's competition. The field includes nine athletes, including a 19-year-old powerhouse who won the competition in Australia last year. Kara Saunders from Australia, who placed second in Australia and 11th globally in 2020 are other contenders. Andrea Nisler (who competed as a team in the 2018 division, finishing third in the United States and fifteenth overall for 2020) is another rising star. In addition to these athletes, the Women's competition will also feature a newcomer to the sport - Icelandan competitor Sara Sigmundsdottir, who won the first place medal in the World Crossfit Games earlier this year.

Pegboard contest

The Pegboard contest at the Crossfit Games 2021 was a first. It was added to Crossfit Games' summer Olympic program alongside double-unders & dumbbell overhead Squats. Toomey-Orr held the record for most Games wins with 30. Sager won Event 11 for the men and took home his third Games victory. Although there were many ties, Toomey-Orr's dominance wasn't enough to prevent him from winning the contest.

CrossFit Games training involves focusing on ten basic physical fitness skills: endurance, strength flexibility power speed and agility. Pegboard tests the grip strength and coordination of competitors. Competitors hold two wooden pegs between each hand and compete to win. After completing the Pegboard, the competition was intense and athletes felt a sense of accomplishment.


Cutting system

CrossFit Games will again use a cutting method for individual competition. It's not as extreme as the cuts used in past Games, but still very different than this year. The competition has 15 individual events. Therefore, it's likely that the first cut of 30 athletes will occur after the seventh or eight event. CrossFit must also answer the question of how it will adjust the points following cuts. The scoring table used in the 2019 games was nearly identical to the one used in 2021, so it's likely that this will continue to be the case.

This year's CrossFit Games team includes 236 competitors, making it the largest ever. Major cuts occur in the first six events. The field is reduced down to 75 athletes. The top 30 finishers compete in a sprint pairt to determine who is the top ten. From there, the top 20 athletes compete in the remaining six events. Castro's system was strongly criticised by former Games participants, who felt that cuts were too substantial.

Reebok's equipment

Reebok announced new CrossFit Games footwear, clothing and other equipment. The new shoes are the Nano X1. They are designed to suit multiple fitness requirements. Although Reebok calls this shoe "the shoe for fitness", it feels more like a training shoe. DuPont’s Kevlar material is used to make the upper of this shoe, which promotes breathability as well as durability. The shoes' responsiveness is enhanced thanks to the RopePro tech and the firm midsole.

CrossFit's sponsorship contract with Reebok is ending at the end of 2020. There will not be a title sponsor for the Games. Reebok has sponsored the Games for more than a decade. It is now evident that their involvement in the Games will decrease. Reebok won't be funding the Games' prize fund, but will continue making all athletic apparel and equipment worn athletes by, including the Reebok gear. However, the company will no longer refer to itself as the "Reebok CrossFit Games" as it does now.
